What Is Considered a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency includes any condition that requires immediate attention to stop bleeding, relieve severe pain, treat infection, or save a tooth. Common dental emergencies include:

  • Severe or persistent toothache

  • Broken, cracked, or chipped tooth

  • Knocked-out tooth

  • Loose or displaced tooth

  • Swelling of the gums, face, or jaw

  • Dental abscess or infection

  • Lost filling or crown

  • Bleeding that will not stop

If you are experiencing facial swelling, difficulty breathing, or difficulty swallowing, seek immediate medical care.

Toothache or Severe Dental Pain

Persistent or severe tooth pain is often a sign of infection, decay, or nerve damage. Rinsing with warm salt water and using a cold compress may temporarily reduce discomfort, but professional treatment is necessary to address the root cause.

Ignoring tooth pain can lead to more serious complications, including abscess formation and bone loss.

Broken or Cracked Tooth

A broken or cracked tooth can expose the inner layers of the tooth, increasing the risk of infection and sensitivity. Treatment depends on the severity of the damage and may include:

  • Dental bonding

  • Crown placement

  • Root canal therapy

  • Tooth extraction (if necessary)

Prompt treatment improves the chances of saving the tooth.

Knocked-Out Tooth

If a tooth has been completely knocked out:

  1. Handle the tooth by the crown (not the root).
  2. Rinse gently with water if dirty (do not scrub).
  3. Try to place it back in the socket if possible.
  4. If not, store it in milk or saliva.
  5. Call our office immediately.

Time is critical. The best chance of saving a tooth is within the first 30–60 minutes.

Dental Abscess or Infection

A dental abscess is a serious infection that can spread if left untreated. Symptoms may include:

  • Severe throbbing pain

  • Swelling in the face or jaw

  • Fever

  • Bad taste in the mouth

  • Pus or drainage

Treatment may involve draining the infection, prescribing antibiotics, and performing a root canal or extraction if necessary.

Do not ignore swelling or infection — these conditions can become life-threatening if untreated.

Lost Crown or Filling

If a crown or filling falls out, the exposed tooth can become sensitive and vulnerable to damage. Contact our office as soon as possible. In the meantime:

  • Keep the area clean

  • Avoid chewing on that side

  • Bring the crown with you if possible

In many cases, the crown can be re-cemented.
